15. Matt Campbell | Penn State

His track record of squeezing every ounce of talent out of a roster is about to face its ultimate test.

"His track record of overachievement is very strong: ISU went 72-55 under Campbell and had some of the best seasons in program history, including a school-record 11 wins in 2024."
14. James Franklin | Virginia Tech
Franklin's highly consistent tenure at Penn State was filled with plenty of New Year's Six bowl victories, even if fans grew frustrated by the lack of a national title. Now, he's bringing that exact high-floor program restoration blueprint down to Blacksburg to awaken a massive sleeping giant. Virginia Tech snagged itself an absolute master at constructing roster depth from scratch.

"He got close in 2024 after taking the Nittany Lions to the semifinals and had five top-10 finishes, four New Year's Six bowl wins and averaged more than nine wins in his 11 full seasons. He is now tasked with a similar project at Virginia Tech and there are few in recent times that have been better at that job."
13. Mike Elko | Texas A&M
Elko did the absolute impossible by completely washing away the perennial underachiever label in College Station in just two short seasons. Even though their brilliant playoff run ended in a heartbreaker to Miami, the positive momentum around the Aggies is incredibly palpable. Unlike the previous regime, the man actually knows how to recruit and develop elite trench talent.

"Elko must continue elevating and prove last year was no fluke. His recruiting success suggests he’s building Texas A&M for staying power, and he’s proven more reliable than predecessor Jimbo Fisher at developing talent."
12. Kyle Whittingham | Michigan
This is easily the single most fascinating, high-stakes coaching experiment of the entire 2026 calendar. After spending multiple decades turning Utah into a physical Pac-12 powerhouse, Whittingham is packing his bags for Ann Arbor to lead the Wolverines back to the top of the Big Ten. His old-school identity of line-of-scrimmage violence should play perfectly in his new home.

"This will be one of the most interesting experiments of the 2026 season. The adjustment to the Big Ten will be significant, but Whittingham relies on strength on both lines of scrimmage and that should play well with the Wolverines. "
11. Kalani Sitake | Brigham Young
Sitake has quietly built himself into the absolute gold standard of high-floor consistency out in Provo. The Cougars are knocking loudly on the door of the Big 12 elite after stacking up back-to-back 11-win campaigns. It is absolutely no surprise that major blue-blood programs across the landscape have tried to violently poach him away from his alma mater.

"He's had winning seasons in eight of his 10 campaigns at his alma matter, the most of any other coach in the league, and he's 57-20 since 2020."
10. Dabo Swinney | Clemson
Dabo's stubborn, old-school refusal to adapt to the modern transfer portal era is officially eating away at his football program. A highly disappointing 7-6 finish has the Tigers looking incredibly human after entering the year with heavy top-five expectations. Whether he can engineer a modern analytical solution will determine if Clemson stays relevant or slides out of the national conversation completely.

"One of the most historically successful active head coaches in college football, Swinney has two national titles and nine conference championships at Clemson. However, the Tigers have fallen off in the era of the transfer portal. Whether he can find a solution will determine whether he rises or falls in these rankings."
9. Kalen DeBoer | Alabama
Stepping into the giant shadow of a legendary icon like Nick Saban is basically a professional suicide mission, but DeBoer has managed the transition remarkably well. He’s already proven he can go toe-to-toe and beat Kirby Smart, though Bama fans are still sweating over a few head-scratching regular-season hiccups. The good news is the administration is entirely locked in on his long-term vision.

"Alabama fans will expect more than 10-win seasons now that he’s settled. DeBoer didn’t run from the challenge, staying after Michigan's job opened. Alabama’s administration retains belief in DeBoer, as evidenced by his contract extension."
8. Steve Sarkisian | Texas
The sky-high expectations in Austin are always completely out of control, which is why a 10-win campaign actually felt underwhelming to a portion of the Longhorn fanbase. But let’s keep some real perspective here: Sark still holds massive bragging rights over bitter rivals Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

"He’s one of just four SEC coaches with multiple playoff victories on the resume. This season will be a litmus test of whether Sarkisian has peaked. He built another roster fit for national title contention."
7. Mario Cristobal | Miami (Florida)
Talk about an unbelievable, high-octane redemption arc for a guy who was sitting on the hot seat not too long ago. After a thoroughly mediocre start to his tenure at his beloved alma mater, Cristobal completely detonated the postseason bracket by knocking off top-heavy giants. The Hurricanes are officially physical, mean, and built on spectacular portal translation.

"Cristobal had a breakthrough season in 2005, leading the Hurricanes to the College Football Playoff after a postseason gauntlet that included defeats of Texas, A&M, Ohio State and Mississippi."
6. Lane Kiffin | LSU
This is peak, unadulterated Lane Kiffin theater at its absolute finest. The guy orchestrates the single finest campaign in Ole Miss history by dragging them into the playoff, and immediately packs his bags for Baton Rouge amidst an absolute storm of drama. LSU wanted a premier offensive mastermind to ignite their locker room, and they certainly got the full experience.

"Optics of Kiffin’s exit aside, he’s never been a better coach than he is now. He remains a masterful quarterback developer. He not only acquires top transfer talent, he blends it. His assignment at LSU: Prove he can handle the program’s demanding expectations."
5. Dan Lanning | Oregon
The Ducks have been playing like an absolute buzzsaw under Lanning's watch, effortlessly asserting their physical dominance during their transition into the Big Ten. But out here in the real world of college football writing, we judge the true tier-one legends by the jewelry on their fingers. He is winning games at an entirely gaudy clip, but the final boss remains elusive in capturing a national title.

"Fair or not, Lanning won’t get his national due until Oregon wins a national championship. The Ducks have been closer than ever since he took over in 2022, including a 26-3 mark in two seasons as members of the Big Ten. "
4. Marcus Freeman | Notre Dame
Freeman has completely flipped the script in South Bend and shattered the old narrative surrounding the program's glass ceiling. Guided by his defensive brilliance, the Fighting Irish marched all the way to the national championship game, officially putting the NFL on absolute notice.

"It's easy to forget, he's still a young coach at the age of 40, and his success has drawn interest from the NFL. His task with the Fighting Irish is continuing to upgrade the roster and capture the school's first national title since 1988. It's a lot closer than when Brian Kelly left, though.
3. Ryan Day | Ohio State
Buckeye Nation can finally breathe one massive, collective sigh of relief after all the insane high-stakes pressure Day was cooking under in Columbus. He finally conquered his postseason demons, silenced the Michigan critics, and hoisted the national championship trophy. Love him or hate him, the man does absolutely nothing but pump elite talent into the NFL and win a historical percentage of his football games.

"While he inherited one of the greatest situations of any first-year coach in Big Ten history, Day has turned Ohio State into an even more effective factory for NFL talent since replacing Urban Meyer in 2019. His number are historically ridiculous with 82 wins in 94 games and top-five finishes in six of his full seven seasons."
2. Kirby Smart | Georgia
Look, Kirby Smart might have finally surrendered his absolute iron grip on the No. 1 overall ranking, but let’s not get crazy here. The Bulldogs remain a terrifying, fully weaponized machine that ruthlessly reloads with five-star talent while the rest of the country scrambles through the portal. He still retains an incredibly high baseline of structural superiority over almost every single peer in the nation.

"Smart’s ability to recruit, retain and develop talent remains a weapon, even in this era of transfer free agency. Georgia is still a perennial contender and built to last amid the sport’s constant state of evolution. That’s a credit to Smart."
1. Curt Cignetti | Indiana
Talk about an absolute, unhinged masterclass in program transformation. Nobody outside of Bloomington saw this level of history coming two years ago, but Cignetti has officially turned the Hoosiers into the absolute center of the college football universe. He has captured the sport's ultimate crown in record time, operating with a level of supreme confidence that has the rest of the Big Ten completely terrified.

"The Hoosiers are 27-2 and 17-1 in the Big Ten in his two seasons with a dominant run to the school's first national title. Cignetti is simply the closest thing college coaching has to a Nick Saban-like figure."
