In 1966, England was eagerly anticipating victory in the World Cup, with high hopes resting on football stars like Captain Bobby Moore and midfielder Bobby Charlton. However, before the competition commenced, an unexpected incident turned a local dog named Pickles into an overnight hero.

The Jules Rimet trophy, a symbol of football supremacy, was on display at a Westminster exhibition under the guard of London police when it was brazenly stolen, leaving behind its empty glass cabinet. The theft not only embarrassed the England Football Association but also attracted sharp criticism from FIFA president Sir Stanley Rouse. In response, the FA Chairman Joe Mears received a ransom demand for 15,000 pounds to return the trophy, which led to a failed sting operation by Scotland Yard that caught the culprit, Edward Betchley, but not the trophy.

Amidst a national hunt for the missing trophy, a four-year-old crossbreed dog named Pickles, while on a walk with his owner David Corbett in Upper Norwood, discovered the trophy wrapped in newspaper beneath a bush. Recognizing its importance, Corbett immediately turned it over to the authorities.

Pickles' accidental discovery not only solved the case but also turned him into a national hero. He was awarded a police medal, received a special invitation to the official tournament dinner, and rose to celebrity status, even securing an agent and a starring role in the movie "The Spy with the Cold Nose." Unfortunately, Pickles' newfound fame was short-lived as he tragically died in an accident just a year later.
